Santa Barbara, CA
Program Description:
The Central Coast MIT Enterprise Forum presents "Taking Chemical Reactions to New Levels”. The Forum always provides high-quality networking opportunities for entrepreneurs and business professionals alike focusing on the challenges of raising capital and growing a start-up business. The program is scheduled for Wednesday, February 19th, 2002 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cabrillo Arts Center Pavilion, in Santa Barbara.\n\nThe evening's keynote speaker will be Tony Cheetham, PhD, who will provide an insider’s look at the Materials Research Laboratory on the UCSB Campus. Shortly thereafter, Phil Lichtenberger of Holl Technologies, a local Camarillo-based emerging growth company, will present Holl Technologies' business model before an expert panel. The panelists will critique this presentation and offer their sage advice, war stories and insights into the world of launching an emerging growth company.\n\nMany of today’s high technology products are made of unique polymers, metal blends or other materials which require special processes under stringent controls for successful fabrication. Many of these processes require specialized chemical reactions in order to successfully maintain the integrity of the product. Increasing the reaction time or the efficiency of the reaction can often times reduce the cost of production. New materials are being developed to increase the efficiency of chemical reactions, thereby enhancing the effects of the products being developed. Could these new materials have unsuspected negative effects on the newly generated products? The Central Coast MIT Enterprise Forum will host a discussion regarding these topics and offer insight and commentary on a company whose mission is to develop new materials that increase the efficiency of chemical reactions.\n\nTony Cheetham, PhD, is currently the director of the Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) as well a professor at UCSB as well as a Managing Partner in the Santa Barbara-based venture capital fund, NextGen Partners. Dr. Cheetham holds numerous publications, honors and awards in the research of material science. Dr. Cheetham will provide a historical overview of the MRL as well as insights into the current state of research going on through the various programs he oversees. Additionally, Dr. Cheetham will provide insights into the NextGen Partners fund and the types of companies they are investing in these days.\n\nHoll Technologies licenses innovative chemical and bio-chemical reacting systems that increase production rates which can dramatically improve the profitability of chemical and bio-chemical companies. Mr. Lichtenberger will present his company before an expert panel consisting of Dr. Cheetham; Gary S. Lazar, MD, Partner in the venture fund of California Technology Ventures; Michael Lee with Unilever Technology Ventures; and Mike Giardello, Founder, President and CEO of Materia, Inc., a materials science-based biotechnology company. Jeff Carmody, Chief Operating Officer of Agility Capital, will moderate the panel.\n\nPeter Iannone, CFO of Envenergy, had this to say about his recent experience with the MIT Enterprise Forum: “The insights of the panel of industry experts provided essential feedback to our Company and Business Strategy Group.” Mr. Iannone went on to say; “The MIT Forum provides an opportunity for unbiased perspective unequaled to any other."\n\nThe Central Coast MIT Enterprise Forum is a non-profit organization committed to the promotion of entrepreneurial innovation and the sharing of knowledge and expertise.
