Shortly thereafter, Communication Machinery Corporation, a local Santa Barbara start-up, will present their business model before an expert panel. The panelists will critique this presentation and offer their sage advice, war stories and insights into the world of launching an emerging growth company.\n\nWireless technology has become a ubiquitous communications tool for the masses. No longer an expensive and bulky technology, wireless communication technologies have taken the world by storm and the latest trend in computer networking are wireless local area networks (wi-LANs). This technology offers freedom of movement for enterprise workers, obviating the need for hard-wired LANs. This technology has the potential to improve worker productivity, and reduce deployment costs of establishing networks. However, the convenience of mobility also introduces new challenges, such as security, roaming, and available bandwidth. Through the use of cellular phones and PDAs, workers are becoming more mobile and are no longer willing to be tethered to their desks by network cabling. Wi-LANs offer the ability to move from office to office and remain connected to the corporate enterprise. Although these technologies are offering users the ability to roam within a given space, security concerns have begun to crop up, showing that eavesdroppers are able to listen in on transmissions of data throughout a LAN and beyond.\n\nThe evening will begin with a keynote presentation by Dr. Kevin Almeroth, Associate Professor of Computer Science at UCSB. Dr. Almeroth’s research focus includes computer networks and protocols, multicast communication, large-scale multimedia systems, and performance evaluation. He is currently developing “A Next Generation Digital Classroom” through a grant from the National Research Foundation. The Digital Classroom will demonstrate the latest advances in wireless networking infrastructure that will deploy enhanced security technologies as well as ad hoc routing techniques. Dr. Almeroth will discuss the latest advancements in wireless networking as well as up and coming challenges associated with wi-LANs.\n\nFollowing the keynote presentation, Larry Green, President and Founder of Communication Machinery Corporation (CMC); INSERT INTO events2 (id, isopen, title, location, briefdescrip, ldescription, date, [current], attendees, map, [time], capacity, reminders, doorpay) VALUES will present his company’s business model and development plans before an expert panel.
