Program Description:
The Central Coast MIT Enterprise Forum will present a dynamic evening entitled “What’s that made of?”. The Forum always provides high-quality networking opportunities for entrepreneurs and business professionals alike focusing on the challenges of raising capital and growing a start-up business. The program is scheduled for Wednesday, January 16th, 2002 at 5:30 p.m. in the Cabrillo Room of the Radisson Hotel, 1111 East Cabrillo Boulevard, Santa Barbara.\n\nThe evening will open with a dynamic presentation by NextGen Partners, addressing the latest trends and advances in Materials Sciences and Enabling Technologies. Shortly thereafter, Agile Materials and Technologies Inc., a local Santa Barbara start-up, will present their business model before an expert panel. The panelists will critique this presentation and offer their sage advice, war stories and insights into the world of launching an emerging growth company.\n\nMaterials Science involves many of the classic research fields of metallurgy, ceramics, and polymer science. Many of the advances in microelectronics have originated in materials-based breakthroughs. Santa Barbara is blessed to have the distinguished Materials Research Laboratory on the campus of UCSB, where significant research is taking place in the Materials Science arena. Things we take for granted such as flat panel displays, powder coating, exhaust-gas catalysts, photovoltaic cells and even transistors and microchips, have all had their elemental breakthroughs in Materials Science.\n\nThe evening will begin with a keynote presentation by members of the NextGen Partners venture capital fund. NextGen seeks to invest in emerging new businesses in the materials science and enabling technologies markets. Examples of the areas of interest for NextGen include: polymers and biomaterials; displays and electronic materials technologies; computer simulation technologies; energy and environment; and telecommunications technologies. The keynote address will cover the latest trends in Materials Science and their criteria for investing in companies developing disruptive and enabling technologies.\n\nFollowing the keynote speech, Bob York and Chris Elsass, co-founders of Agile Materials and Technologies Inc., will present their company’s business model and development plans before an expert panel. Agile is in the process of creating new, high-frequency electronic components by exploiting thin-film ferroelectrics (TFF); INSERT INTO events2 (id, isopen, title, location, briefdescrip, ldescription, date, [current], attendees, map, [time], capacity, reminders, doorpay) VALUES a disruptive and versatile technology for creating compact, voltage-tunable components for the telecommunications industry as well as other applications. Jeff Carmody, Partner in the Agility Capital fund, will moderate the panel. \n\nPeter Iannone, CFO of Envenergy, had this to say about his recent experience with the MIT Enterprise Forum: “The insights of the panel of industry experts provided essential feedback to our Company and Business Strategy Group.” Mr. Iannone went on to say; “The MIT Forum provides an opportunity for unbiased perspective unequaled to any other."\n\n
