This program focuses on the trials and tribulations of developing an integrated hardware and software business from the ground up. Total Impact, based in Camarillo, specializes in the development of miniature Linux computers, branded as “The briQ™” These network appliance computers are, among other applications, uniquely suited for high performance corporate enterprise systems, a market that is beginning to gain serious attention in the wake of recently built B2B empires.\n\nDeveloping a highly versatile, exceptionally fast, small footprint-supercomputer in a box the size of a standard CD-ROM drive is a difficult task; mass producing, marketing and selling it is another story. With these issues in mind, a panel of experts will critique the offering made by Total Impact and offer insights into the challenges that the company will face in executing on their model.\n\nGlenn E. Churchman, Esq., CEO of Total Impact (www.totalimpact.com) will present his company before an expert panel consisting of Dirk Gates, President, CEO and Chairman of Xircom, Inc.; Michelle Law, an Associate with the venture capital firm of Greylock and Laurie Shedler, Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Alliances at PeopleSupport. Joe Houska, an Intellectual Property and Business Attorney with Hatch and Parent, will moderate the panel.\n\nDirk Gates\nAt the age of 27, Dirk Gates co-founded Xircom. Mr. Gates is responsible for Xircom's technical vision, strategic product development efforts, and marketing direction. He has served as President since incorporation in November 1988, Chief Executive Officer since October 1991, and Chairman since 1995. In 1992, he was honored as High Technology Entrepreneur of the Year for the Greater Los Angeles area, and in 1994, made Forbes Magazine's "Whiz Kid" list of the five youngest CEOs of the Best small Companies in America. Xircom was acquired by Intel in Q1 2001.\n\nMichele Law\nMichele Law joined Greylock as an Associate in the fall of 2000. Prior to Greylock, Michele was a lead hardware engineer at Sun Microsystems specializing in the design and development of RF and digital board products for Sun's workstation and graphic product lines and was co-inventor on two technical patents. While at Sun, she also held program management and product marketing roles. In addition, Michele was an analog chip designer at IBM and an associate at the investment bank Robertson Stephens where she executed IPO transactions in the eBusiness and Internet infrastructure technology space. Michele holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.\n\nLaurie Shedler\nLaurie brings over fifteen years of professional experience in sales and marketing to her position at PeopleSupport. Laurie began her career at ROLM Corporation (ROLM/IBM/Siemens); INSERT INTO events2 (id, isopen, title, location, briefdescrip, ldescription, date, [current], attendees, map, [time], capacity, reminders, doorpay) VALUES where she served in several capacities ranging from technical support, sales and management. In 1994 Laurie joined the sales force of Aspect Communications, a leading provider of Customer Relationship Solutions. After a successful year, she was promoted to Manager, National Accounts working with customers such as Fidelity Investments, First Union and Xerox Corporation. During her tenure as Manager, the team exceeded their sales targets by 126 percent and 146 percent. In 1997 Laurie was promoted to Director, North American Marketing where she lead the efforts to evolve Aspect's positioning in the marketplace, which contributed to a 30 percent increase in sales. Laurie holds a B.S. in Advertising from Michigan State University.\nJoe Houska\n\nJoe Houska\nJoe is a business attorney, with a special emphasis on intellectual property and technology law. Joe has negotiated and documented numerous transactions including: the development and licensing of software and hardware for a 10,000 orders/day e-commerce fulfillment system; the development and transfer of bio-medical devices to a leading international manufacturer/distributor; international royalty and consulting relationships in the medical industry; and an Internet e-commerce mall development and royalty relationship. Joe counsels Green Hills Software and has drafted its software licenses with Ericsson, Agilent, Boeing, Nortel and Hewlett-Packard; managed and negotiated the sale of a contolling interest in radio station KDB-FM; negotiated a strategic alliance between Commission Junction and Roadrunner (a consortium owned by Microsoft, Time Warner, Compact and AT&T); and handled the corporate due diligence and related representations and warranties in a $63 million stock sale. Joe is on the South Coast Business & Technology Awards Steering Committee and is active in his church.
