On Wednesday, September 16, our keynote speakers, Ronald Rice and Lorrie Thomas, will discuss the power of web marketing and describe effective strategies to use social media to create brand awareness and boost business.  Our panelists will describe how they have successfully used social media as marketing tools.

Ronald E. Rice, PhD, Chair in the Social Effects of Mass Communication in the Department of Communication and Co-Director of the Carsey-Wolf Center for Film, Television, and New Media, UC Santa Barbara

Ronald E. Rice (Ph.D., M.A. in Communication Research, Stanford University, 1982; B.A. in English Literature, Columbia University, 1971) is Arthur N. Rupe Chair in the Social Effects of Mass Communication in the Department of Communication, and Co-Director of the Carsey-Wolf Center for Film, Television, and New Media, at University of California, Santa Barbara.

He has co-authored or co-edited Media Ownership: Research and Regulation (2008); The Internet and Health Care: Theory, Research and Practice (2006); Social Consequences of Internet Use: Access, Involvement and Interaction (2002); The Internet and Health Communication (2001); Accessing and Browsing Information and Communication (2001); Public Communication Campaigns (1st ed.: 1981; 2nd ed.: 1989; 3rd ed.: 2001); Research Methods and the New Media (1988); Managing Organizational Innovation (1987); and The New Media: Communication, Research and Technology (1984).

Lorrie Thomas, Founder, Web Marketing Therapy

Lorrie Thomas is a marketing educator, writer, strategist, web marketing expert and speaker. She is the founder of Web Marketing Therapy, www.webmarketingtherapy.com, a smart, fun full–service marketing agency and a recession–friendly self–help online marketing educational resource. Her "wild web woman" team serves small businesses, entrepreneurs and marketers. She teaches Web Marketing Applications, Social Media Marketing and Search Engine Marketing Applications classes at UCSB Extension and UC Berkeley Extension. Lorrie was on the founding team at ValueClick Media. She speaks nationally on a number of marketing–related topics and caters her presentations to the business, niche, skill sets and professional concerns of her attendees. Lorrie also writes for several online publications and is regularly interviewed and quoted by online marketing news sites.


Graham Farrar, Owner and Founder, Santa Barbara Luxury Rentals

Graham is the founder and owner of Santa Barbara Luxury Rentals (http://www.sbluxuryrentals.com),  an upscale vacation rental management company located in Santa Barbara, California. Santa Barbara Luxury Rentals has been in business since 2003 and was one of the first boutique vacation rental management companies in the Santa Barbara area.  He also founded iStoryTime (http://www.istorytimeapp.com) an iPhone application development company.

Graham was a member of the founding team of Sonos Inc (http://www.sonos.com) which designs and manufactures a next-generation multi-zone wireless digital home stereo. As an early member, Graham was instrumental in all areas of the company development from Product Design, Software/Hardware Validation, Press, Sales and Corporate IT infrastructure. Prior to Sonos, Graham was part of the original team at Software.com, which developed the first high-end email infrastructure servers for telephone companies and ISPs. He helped grow Software.com from a private company through its initial public offering on the NASDAQ in 1999, during which time he was involved in Product Development, Product Testing, Network Design, Implementation and Sales. Before Software.com, Graham worked at WaveFront Technologies, one of the first industrial 3-D animation software development companies. 

Graham is an avid adventurer, music fan and environmentalist. He has just returned from his second multi-year ocean adventure exploring the south pacific, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean seas. He also sits on the Board of Directors of both Heal the Ocean (http://www.healtheocean.org) and The Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation (http://www.sbbowl.com).

Thomas Meyer, Public Relations, Sonos, Inc.

Thomas has been interacting with consumers and the media via the world of public relations for more than 12 years.  Currently overseeing global PR for Sonos, Meyer has been immersed in consumer electronics, music and entertainment since moving to Los Angeles in 2000.  In his roles at Sonos, Zeno Group, Weber Shandwick and Rogers & Cowan, Thomas has been exposing consumers to new products, technologies and services through both traditional and social media outlets.
