Are you thinking about starting a company and want to know about facilities in the area? Do you have out-of-the-box thoughts on how to resolve our technology space issue? The October 15th program brings together a start-up out of UCSB, CytomX; a mid-size company, Allergan Medical, that purchased a Santa Barbara company, Inamed; and an insider in the process of learning what it takes to get technology space from the “wish” stage to actual development. The program presents some of the challenges in obtaining technology space and what has gone on in the past to resolve the problem. Cabrillo Boulevard, Santa Barbara, CA 93103 \n\nCOST: \n$30, pre-registration online before October 15 at www.centralcoastmit.com\n$40 on October 15, or at the door \nParking, $2.00\n\n\nSPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES\n\n\nPresenter/Panelist: Dr. Don Oparah, Ph.D., Founding Director of the Venture Acceleration Initiative\n\nDr. Don Oparah, in addition to being the Founding Director of the Venture Acceleration Initiative, brings a range of experience allowing him to operate effectively across the worlds of academia and business.\n\nDon initially joined UC Santa Barbara in 2006 as a UC Discovery Fellow and developed the vision and concept for VAI working closely with the Deans of Engineering and the Sciences and other campus leaders. \n\nIn his role as director, Don provides leadership, direction and motivation to the team, acts as an evangelist to and secures support and resources from the external community, develops strategic partnerships and works actively with a growing number of promising campus ventures. He received a joint degree in Computer Science and Electronics at the University of London and a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he worked with the real-time operating systems and high-speed networking group.\n\nDon went on to work in Information Technology and Strategy, consulting in London for several years before moving to California to complete his MBA at the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management with a focus on entrepreneurship.\n\nPresenter/Panelist: Nancy E. Stagliano, Ph.D., CEO of CytomX\n\nDr. Stagliano received her B.S. in Electrical Engineering and her M.S. in Biomedical Engineering, both from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. Driven by a keen interest in biological systems, Nancy then obtained her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Miami in Miami, FL. After three years as an independently funded researcher at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, she joined the Cambridge, MA biotechnology industry, where she worked for almost 8 years at Millennium Pharmaceuticals. Nancy\\\\\\'s career spans all aspects of\nbiotech, from drug discovery research to global medical affairs to corporate communications. For the past 1.5 years, Nancy served as the COO of CytomX, LLC.\n\nPresenter/Panelist: Nick J. Manesis, Ph.D. Vice President, Biomaterials, Allergan Medical \n\nDr. Manesis received his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego and specialized in the field of peptide synthesis and conformational analysis. Subsequent focus has been in the area of hydrogel polymers for use in both medical devices for ophthalmic applications and inkjet printing. \n \nHe has over 20 years of experience with biomedical devices and digital printing and has held R & D positions within Allergan Medical Optics, Pilkington Barnes Hind, Hewlett-Packard Company, and CooperVision, with activities targeted at producing intra-corneal implant, contact lens, and inkjet media products. As a Director of Chemistry & Materials Science at CooperVision, he was instrumental in bringing silicone hydrogel technology in-house and establishing Materials and Analytical Testing Departments. He has recently joined Allergan Medical and will be responsible for biomaterials research and analytical testing of next generation medical aesthetics and implants.\n\n\nPanelist: Craig Zimmerman, President, The Towbes Group, Inc. (TGI)\n\nCurrently, Mr. Zimmerman oversees all of TGI’s operating divisions including development, construction, commercial and residential property management, and maintenance services. TGI’s management portfolio includes more than 1,800 residential units and more than 1.8 million square feet of commercial office, industrial, and retail projects. Notable new projects include the Sumida Gardens apartment community (200 units); INSERT INTO events2 (id, isopen, title, location, briefdescrip, ldescription, date, [current], attendees, map, [time], capacity, reminders, doorpay) VALUES Fairview Business Center (73,000 sf) and Westgate Ranch, which includes more than 550 residential units and a new shopping center.\n\nMr. Zimmerman is a graduate of the University of Southern California with a degree in Entrepreneurial Services where he attended the nationally recognized Entrepreneur Program. Mr. Zimmerman began his real estate career at Barrister Executive Suites, Inc., in Los Angeles, where he was part of a management team that purchased the struggling executive suite operator out of bankruptcy and helped create a company that is considered a national leader in the industry. Mr. Zimmerman continues his association with Barrister as a member of its Board of Directors.\n\n\n\n\n |
