\nWelcome: Richard Tico, Central Coast MIT Enterprise Forum \n

\nKeynote Speaker: Jeff Barnes, Co-Founder of CafeFX \n

\nPanel Discussion: Andrew Davis, Douglas Hersh, Richard Corwin & David Davis \n

\n\nProgram Description \n

\nWhen we think about the future of technology in filmmaking, the possibilities kindled in our imaginations can be endless. Things like spectacular special effects, HD and 3D projection systems are forever altering the creative landscape; rippling through the industry much like the tectonic shifts from silent to sound, and black & white to color during bygone eras. \n

\nDigital downloads of films and television programs reportedly surpassed the $1 billion mark in 2006, and the transition to digital distribution is poised to disrupt the home entertainment and motion picture exhibition arenas. This shift from the traditional model, which is reliant on physical goods such as film, has also enabled compelling cost reductions for both producers and distributors. \n

\nPlease join us for our upcoming January 16th Central Coast MIT Enterprise Forum event to learn how some professionals have found success in this changing industry and alternatively why others have failed. Keynote speaker Jeff Barnes, Co-Founder of CaféFX, will shed some light on these topics along with an impressive panel of prominent players in the filmmaking trade. \n

\nBarnes is the driving force behind business development, sales and marketing for CafeFX and The Syndicate, where his leadership and vision has facilitated the company’s meteoric growth into a 36,000 square-foot facility on an eight acre campus and a high end post production studio in the creative hub of Santa Monica. CafeFX has become a world-class provider of digital imaging services for such major studios as Paramount Pictures, Miramax, Universal, New Line Cinema, Fox, Dimension, Columbia and Disney. \n

\nAs a visual effects production executive, his credits include The Kite Runner, Evan Almighty, Spider-Man 3, Ghost Rider, The Departed, Pan’s Labyrinth, Art School Confidential, King Kong, Memoirs of a Geisha, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Sin City, and The Aviator. He was also executive producer on Sententia Entertainment’s first feature film, Danika. \n

\nBarnes was instrumental in forming the creative and financial partnership with director Guillermo del Toro to co-produce the Academy Award®-winning Pan’s Labyrinth through Sententia Entertainment, further evidence of his vision and leadership. Barnes is an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Visual Effects Society (VES) and is an invited guest at conferences and film festivals around the world. \n\n\nPANELIST – Andrew Davis, Director \n\nAndrew Davis is a filmmaker with a reputation for directing intelligent thrillers, most notably the Academy Award®-nominated box-office hit, The Fugitive, starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. The film received seven Academy Award® nominations including Best Picture and earned Jones a Best Supporting Actor award. Davis garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director and a Directors Guild of America nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Direction. \n\nIn reviewing The Fugitive, film critic Roger Ebert commended Davis, noting that he “transcends genre and shows an ability to marry action and artistry that deserves comparison with Hitchcock, David Lean, and Carol Reed. He paints with bold, visual strokes.” \n\nDavis made his directorial debut in 1978 with the critically acclaimed independent musical, Stony Island, which he also co-wrote and produced. Davis’ other directorial credits include A Perfect Murder, starring Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Viggo Mortensen; Chain Reaction, starring Keanu Reeves and Morgan Freeman; and Steal Big, Steal Little, starring Andy Garcia and Alan Arkin. \n\nMr. Davis also directed and produced Holes, the adaptation of Louis Sachar's Newberry Medal and National Book Award-winning children's novel. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight and Patricia Arquette, Holes grossed over $70 million theatrically and over $40 million in home video sales since its release in April 2003. Holes has been praised by audiences of all ages, furthering Davis' reputation as a director with a wide range. A.O. Scott’s review in The New York Times called it "the best film released by an American studio so far this year". \n\nDavis has recently completed the Disney / Touchstone feature film The Guardian, which was released on September 29, 2006. The film examines the true heroes of the ocean, the U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers. \n\nPANELIST - Douglas Hersh; Dean Educational Programs–Technology, SBCC \n\nA third-generation filmmaker, Doug received his Bachelor’s Degree at Yale University and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership at Argosy University. Recognizing the power of the moving image to educate and entertain, Doug first applied his skills in the academic arena as the Managing Producer-Director at The University of California, San Diego. Long before it was considered feasible, Doug pioneered the use of streaming video for clinical education, allowing physicians around the world to benefit -- at the click of a mouse -- from the cutting-edge medical research being performed at UCSD. \n\nIn 2006/2007, Doug left his position as Dean of the International Academy of Film and Television in Cebu, Philippines to accept a new position as the Dean of Educational Programs, Technology at Santa Barbara City College. \n\nPANELIST - Richard Corwin, CEO Vital-Signz \n\nRichard Corwin is an Emmy Award winning Supervising Sound Editor, known most notably for his work on Max Headroom. He began his career in commercials, industrial and educational films and possesses experience directing a variety of media content through the post-production pipeline. His credits include Saturday morning animation as well as natural history documentaries. He was also at the forefront of Disney Studios and Paramount Pictures as they transitioned to digital audio technology from film. \n\nHis body of work is comprised of well over 60 feature films and hundreds of hours of television including Titanic, Star Trek, Tales from the Crypt, Lion King 2 and Mission Impossible. \nRichard is co-founder and Producer of Digital Days, a showcase of entertainment technologies.
